An investigation and consulting company

Most serious workplace threats show warning signs.

Organizations struggle when those signs are misinterpreted, ignored, or handled without a defensible process.

McClain Security Group, LLC helps organizations identify, assess, and manage concerning behavior before it escalates into harm, liability, or reputational damage.

Concerning behavior is rarely clear-cut.

HR may recognize patterns but lacks risk authority.
Security often responds, but too late to influence outcomes.
Legal enters once exposure already exists.
Leadership seeks certainty where none exists.

In the absence of a structured, multidisciplinary approach, organizations are forced to rely on fragmented judgment—creating risk whether they act or fail to act. Effective threat management is not about prediction or punishment, but proportionate, documented decision-making under uncertainty.

McClain Security Group, LLC is a Virginia-based consulting firm specializing in behavioral threat assessment and management, workplace violence prevention, and complex investigations. Based in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and supported by a network of trusted partners, our team is comprised of former FBI special agents, seasoned investigators, industry professionals, and recognized subject-matter experts.

Drawing on decades of field experience, our team applies investigative and threat management methodologies informed by industry-leading best practices and insights unavailable through purely academic or compliance-driven models. Our work is grounded in real-world cases where decisions carried operational, legal, and human consequences.

Often the first conversation is simply about clarifying roles, responsibilities, and risk posture.

Trusted and confidential

Organizations rarely engage external expertise because everything is working well. They call when concerning behavior, complex incidents, or uncertainty about risk creates pressure to act—without a clear or defensible path forward.

Our services are designed to support organizations at different stages of risk recognition, response, and long-term management, whether addressing a specific incident or strengthening internal capability.

We support organizations across a range of behavioral and security challenges, including:

  • Developing and strengthening behavioral threat assessment and management (BTAM) programs
  • Managing active or emerging workplace violence concerns
  • Conducting program evaluations to identify gaps, failure points, and defensibility issues
  • Providing direct case consultation and ongoing threat management support
  • Delivering tailored training to HR, Security, Legal, and leadership teams
  • Conducting criminal and civil investigations, including complex and sensitive matters
  • Applying behavioral analysis and Cyber Behavioral Profiling™ to cyber-enabled threats and investigations

Our behavioral threat assessment and management consulting services are tailored to each organization’s structure, culture, and risk tolerance. Engagements may include initial consultations to clarify risk and response options, comprehensive program evaluations, bespoke training, and direct case support for ongoing threat management situations.

We focus on proportionate, evidence-based responses that balance safety, legal defensibility, and organizational realities—helping clients act with clarity rather than fear.

Corporate, Private, and Cyber Investigations

When incidents involve sensitive allegations, potential criminal exposure, or reputational risk, organizations often require independent investigative support that is both discreet and defensible.

We conduct confidential corporate and private investigations involving:

  • Threat assessment and threat management matters
  • Workplace violence and misconduct
  • White collar crime, including financial crimes, fraud, public corruption, and money laundering
  • Behavioral analysis, violent crimes, and interviews
  • Cyber-related incidents, including ransomware, malware, cybersecurity breaches, and computer intrusions

Our investigative work is informed by behavioral analysis and decades of experience handling complex, high-stakes matters where accuracy, discretion, and documentation are critical.

Threat Assessment and Threat Management

Concerning behavior is often ambiguous—falling between HR, Security, Legal, and leadership responsibility. Without a structured threat assessment and management process, organizations risk both overreaction and dangerous inaction.

We provide behavioral threat assessment and management consulting services rooted in a deep understanding of behavioral indicators, risk factors, and escalation dynamics. Our work includes:

  • Development and implementation of internal Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) teams
  • Comprehensive program evaluations, including gap analysis and defensibility reviews
  • Direct case consultation and ongoing threat management support
  • Support for high-risk employment actions, including terminations

Our approach emphasizes proportionate, evidence-based management strategies that align safety, legal defensibility, and organizational realities.

Workplace Violence / Misconduct

Many workplace violence programs rely heavily on policy and training, but fail under real-world pressure due to unclear ownership, limited behavioral analysis, or reactive decision-making.

Our workplace violence prevention services help organizations move from policy-based compliance to operational readiness. We employ proactive behavioral analysis and risk-informed strategies to identify potential threats and provide actionable recommendations before escalation occurs.

Services include behavioral analysis, program and policy development, and tailored prevention strategies that exceed ASIS national standards and reflect real-world case experience.

Organizations often need specialized expertise to evaluate cases, train internal teams, or provide expert analysis that exceeds internal capacity.

Our consulting and training services support organizations across a range of complex issues, including behavioral threat assessment and management, workplace violence, case reviews, behavioral analysis, interview strategies, and crimes against children.

Our experts include board-certified specialists in child abuse pediatrics, psychologists, psychiatrists, certified behavioral analysts, experienced threat managers, and other mental health professionals. In appropriate matters, we also provide expert testimony.

Cyber incidents are often treated as purely technical failures, overlooking human motivations, decision-making, and behavioral patterns that drive escalation and targeting.

Cyber Behavioral Profiling™ is the unique, structured analysis of the psychological, cognitive, emotional, and motivational factors driving cyber offenders—examining how these elements shape attack planning, decision-making, adaptive strategies, targeting logic, and online behavior.

In today’s AI-driven and socially networked digital ecosystem, Cyber Behavioral Profiling™ is inextricable from Behavioral Threat Assessment & Management (BTAM). Together, they provide a holistic framework for understanding and managing threat actors whose behaviors are now mediated, magnified, and weaponized through artificial intelligence, synthetic media, algorithmic systems, and social-media platforms. This unified approach allows practitioners to predict escalation, identify early-stage behavioral markers, disrupt emerging digital threat pathways, and design targeted, psychologically informed defenses against human-driven cyber reputational, physical and hybrid attacks.

Organizations engage our services when the stakes are high and the margin for error is low.

How We Engage

Our engagements are designed to support organizations facing uncertainty, ambiguity, or elevated risk—often before a clear course of action exists.

We typically begin with a confidential conversation to understand the nature of the concern, the organizational context, and the decision environment. This initial discussion is exploratory and non-obligational, focused on clarifying options rather than prescribing solutions.

From there, engagements may include:

Throughout each engagement, we emphasize:

Our role is not to replace internal judgment, but to support it—helping organizations act with clarity rather than urgency, and structure rather than fear.

Engagements are scalable, confidential, and aligned to the organization’s risk posture.

Unparalleled expertise at your service

Organizations rarely fail because they lack policies, intelligence, or good intentions. They struggle when concerning behavior emerges and leaders are forced to make high-stakes decisions under uncertainty—often without clear ownership, structure, or defensible process.

McClain Security Group was founded to help organizations navigate those moments with clarity, restraint, and judgment grounded in real-world experience.

Jeff McClain, President

Jeff McClain is the President and Founder of McClain Security Group, LLC, an investigative and consulting firm serving corporations and private clients facing complex behavioral, security, and investigative challenges.

Jeff retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2025 with nearly 24 years as a Special Agent, where he investigated and led responses to matters involving violent crime, threats to life, complex financial crimes, cyber-enabled threats, counterintelligence, and crimes against adults and children.

Throughout his FBI career, Jeff operated in environments where misjudgment carried immediate operational, legal, and human consequences. His early investigative work focused on violent crime, healthcare fraud, complex financial crimes, and crimes against children, often in close coordination with federal, state, and local partners. His experience includes participation in nationally significant investigations, including serial homicide and the DC Sniper case.

Jeff later served as a Supervisory Special Agent in the FBI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Operations Unit, providing oversight, response coordination, and training to domestic and international agencies. He was subsequently promoted to lead violent crime, gang, and drug investigations in FBI Richmond.

Jeff ultimately advanced to the FBI’s Critical Incident Response Group, where he led the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Units (BAUs). In this role, he oversaw investigations involving counterterrorism, threats to life, counterintelligence, cyber threats, and crimes against adults and children. Under his leadership, the BAUs supported high-profile national and international investigations and responded to critical incidents requiring rapid, defensible judgment under extreme uncertainty.

Jeff serves on the Board of Directors of the International Homicide Investigators Association (IHIA) as Director of Training Curriculum and is a member of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP). He is a licensed Private Investigator in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
